If you own a poodle, you will find that one of the expenses that will start eating away at your pocket book is grooming them! Many people are finding that grooming poodles themselves can both help them save their money and help them get to know their pet a little bit better as well. While the art of poodle grooming might seem a little esoteric, the truth is, anyone who has a bit of patience and a willingness to help their pet look the best that it can can do a fairly accomplished job.
When you are looking to groom a standard poodle, you will find that the job takes about three hours once you have mastered it. You may find that when you are getting started that it is best to let the job proceed at intervals over the space of a few days, and this will give you and your poodle a bit of a break. If you feel that the trouble and the time investment are not worth it, remember to find a professional that you trust and take the time to network with other poodle owners to help you figure out what you need to know.
When considering grooming poodles, you’ll find that you should think about what kind of trim that you prefer. Your poodle’s coat can be shaped into a number of different looks, all of them attractive, but remember that the longer and more shaped that your dog’s coat needs to be, the more maintenance that it will need. Similarly, if your dog is a show dog, you’ll also find that you need to have some sort of variation on the lion cut, which does require a fair amount of upkeep.
If you have a show poodle, remember that it will have a lion cut of some sort. A lion cut has three standard variations, including a puppy cut, an English saddle cut and a continental cut. You’ll find that these all have ths ame standard look and they all come from a time when poodles were used to retrieve birds that had been shot into the water, as the long ruff of fur on the chest would protect the lungs and the fur on the legs would protect the bones.
If you are not going to show your dog, you’ll find that you have quite a few more options when it comes to making sure that your dog looks tidy. You can do an all-around short trim, which is ideal when you are considering how to make a good grooming job last, but if you are looking for something more flashy, consider looking at pictures online and in books to get some ideas.
When you are considering grooming poodles, you’ll find that clipping the fur on the feet, face and the bottom of the tail very short for hygienic reasons, because it will allow for less food to get trapped there. You’ll find that when you clip the that things don’t get trapped between their toes, and you’ll also find that the shorter the coat is, the easier it is to cut and dry. Remember to wash your poodle before you groom it to keep your tools in good shape, and the better the equipment you get the better off you’ll be.

Sure, we all love our dogs. The indoor poop and the pee spots are unfortunate incidents that happen to come with the package. Wouldn’t it be great though to not have to deal with cleaning up his mess anymore? With your patience and these tips on potty training dogs, it can be done.
Not a lot of people jump for joy at the mention of house training dogs. As a result, some people who adopt older dogs will be surprised to find them still untrained in ‘doing their business’ outside. While it may be easier to teach puppies to eliminate properly; adult dogs can still be taught correct toilet behavior anytime.
If you plan to teach your dog to not do something anymore, good luck. You won’t encounter much success. Instead, you should unseat the wrong behavior in his daily activities by substituting it with a new pattern. In this case, its learning to go outside for eliminating.
Choose an area for this specific purpose. Around ten to fifteen minutes after meal times, go out and walk him around the designated spot. As you walk back and forth around the spot, clearly speak out a phrase that relates to this particular activity like, ‘go potty’. Say it repeatedly until he finally ‘goes potty’. Praise him enthusiastically right after to let him know he’s done a good job. Do this for a few weeks, always using the same toilet area. Remember house training dogs require consistency in the patterns you set.
Once in a while you will still come across the dreaded mound of discharge inside your house. If he is in the middle of potty, stop him quickly and bring him outside to finish his business. Give him treats when he discharges outside successfully. If you do find the poop without the pet nearby it will be no use to yell at him anymore. He will not understand your reason for being upset and this will only serve to confuse him. To ensure this doesn’t happen again, be extra vigilant after meals.
In case it happens, clean the accident immediately as thoroughly as possible. Use a solution that combats odor to get rid of any residual smell it might leave behind or else the dog will revisit his spot and use it to eliminate again. Remember in potty training dogs, they do not like sharing their sleeping area and their toilet area; so keep their cage or crate as small as possible without it being too cramped for them.
Do not feed him or put water and food inside his cage at night so your sleep will not be disturbed. You can take him outside to discharge in the morning or even after he wakes up from a short cat, I mean, dog nap. When you have succeeded in teaching him how to go out for this particular activity, see to it that leaving the house is as convenient as possible for him. A swinging dog flap installed in your doors or a cage near an open back door will do the job.
Potty training dogs is every responsible pet owner’s priority. This will keep your dog disciplined and mentally stimulated- a good preparation for other obedience tasks. More than that, your home will welcome the change and thank you for it.

Horse jewelry, jewelry with a horse design, has fascinated people throughout the history of man. From the earliest of times, families and individuals would incorporate the image of a horse onto their most treasured possessions, which often included jewelry. Made from precious metals and gems such as gold, silver and diamonds, they were passed down from generation to generation…becoming valuable family keepsakes.
Where did this practice come from? This desire to put a “mere animal” into beautiful jewelry that will be owned and loved and yes, shown to others? When we think of the horse it’s not hard to fathom. The horse is an animal with a number of desirable traits…traits that we all hope to possess in our own character. Some of these traits are:
1) The Strength of the Horse. Horses have been asked to perform man’s most menial tasks for years and years. Consider the workhorses like the Clydesdale. They can plow the fields all day long and still find time to pull those famous Budweiser Wagons. Jewelry that incorporates the horse design will exude the strength and shear power of this magnificent animal. This form of jewelry is very popular amongst men.
2) A Horse’s Grace. When you think of grace what come to mind? A horse? This is true for many people. If you watch a horse running along a field you see grace in action. Every fiber of their being seems focused on propelling this beautiful creature along. Beautifully streamlined, this magnificent creature has become the heart’s desire of many a young boy and girl. What happens if we add diamonds to the mix? We come up with a very special blend. Diamonds are also known for their class and elegance, and it’s a gem that marries perfectly with equestrian design.
3) Nobility – What a noble creature the horse is. During the Middle Ages, knights decked out in full battle armor rode horses with the symbol of the horse incorporated into their shields. And how did the peasants get around? They walked along side their knights no horse, no armor, and no shield let alone one with a horse design. Let’s fast forward to our world today. People of high-ranking are often honored with horse jewelry, particularly gold brooches and medallions. Rings with the design of a horse’s head are often awarded to others as a sign of “higher social class” or “nobility”.
We have left til now the main reason that people wear horse jewelry. Do you know what it is? It’s because they love this magnificent animal. Sure, like you and I, they have to go to work or school, shop or play, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t display their love of horses to the world.
In future articles we will be detailing some of the finer examples of horse jewelry, and we hope you will join us. If you find that you “just can’t wait” for these items, please visit us on our blog.

Pet travel crates allow you to very easily and safely transport your beloved pet almost anywhere. You are going to have to pick the proper cage based on the pet that you are going to be traveling with. You are going to find that you have a lot to choose from. If designer cages are your cup of tea, you can pick one of those from the hundreds of assorted styles and designs available. You are going to need to look carefully when picking the 1 that is simply right for your needs.
If you have a medium or large dog, you are going to want a large crate. You could require assistance with the crate if you have a larger animal. The crate needs to be a size that allows your dog to sit down up, turn around, and stand easily. You also need to make quite sure you can fit dishes for food and water in the crate.
Small dogs can travel in small crates, or in travel bags that you keep on your person. Animals traveling this way is allowed on quite a few airlines. Travel bags for dogs can include backpack carriers, front slings, and handbags that allow the dogs head to poke through the top.
Cats typically require pet travel cages in the form of a cat carrier. This is really the only safe and secure way to transport a cat. Unlike dogs, cats do not tend to stand while they travel, so the carrier doesn’t need to be large enough for them to do so. There should be ample room for the cat to be comfortable in the carrier; however, it only has to have enough space for your cat to lie down without the top of the carrier touching his head.
Once you have chosen one of many appropriate pet travel cages for you and your pet, you will be ready to travel in style. With a full range of appropriate carriers available, it’s time that your pet accompany you to any destination! So, bring your pet along with you in confidence and security and see what a great time the 2 of you have together.
Purchasing items for your pet, and caring for them are part of what makes pet ownership so rewarding. A travel carrier is necessary to properly secure your pet and keep the animal comfortable during travel. These cages will make either a two week vacation or a day shopping trip, more enjoyable for both of you. I mean they are an extension of the family – Are they not? Mine certainly believe that they are!

People can be allergic to horses, which can result in one or more of the following symptoms: – Itchy or watery eyes – Runny or itchy nose – Itchy skin, hives or rashes – Coughing or Sneezing – Breathing problems – Asthma attack
The severity of these symptoms varies from person to person, ranging from a slight itch to a serious asthma attack. People with asthma should be careful when they first come into contact with horses as there have been a number of cases of fatal asthma reactions. In particular, asthmatic children coming into contact with horses for the first time should be carefully monitored to see if they have an adverse reaction and their medication should be available to hand in case that they do.
The most common cause of horse allergies is horse dander (bits of hair and skin which flake off, like dandruff). Other common causes include horse mites, urine and even horse salvia.
It is not uncommon for people to have an allergic reaction without being near a horse, through indirect contact. For example, if you enter a barn or other enclosed space where horses have been, one can come into contact with allergic agents even though the horses are not present at the time. Likewise, if a family member rides or works with horses, it is possible to have a reaction upon exposure to clothes or tack which they bring home which are carrying bits of allergic agents (e.g. dander).
Horse allergies can be easily treated, using the same methods as for other allergies. These include medication, desensitizing treatment or simple avoidance.
If you want to ride but find that your allergies are making this difficult, you may want to try riding a ‘curly horse’ breed. Many people who suffer from horse allergies find that they have little or no reaction with these breeds.
You may also wish to be medically tested to determine which aspect of horses you are allergic to. For example, if you are allergic to horse mites, treatment of the horse and its box against mites may reduce your symptoms to acceptable levels. Likewise, if it is urine or saliva you are allergic to, one can take care to avoid these specific elements when involved with horses.
The article Allergy to Horses was written by Doug Stewart, as part of his series on Horse Care.

Heartworms are a prevalent parasite in the United States. This parasite is passed onto a dog by a mosquito bite which injects heartworm larvae into the bloodstream of the dog. Getting treatment before heartworm symptoms in dogs begin to appear is the best course of action in fighting the parasite that can make a dog very ill or kill it.
Many pet owners have their pets treated for heartworms each year during a regular checkup. Being treated before symptoms appear ensures that the pet will not develop heartworms or, if they have been bitten by a mosquito carrying larvae, the larvae will not survive long enough to do any permanent damage.
The rate of dogs who are being infested with heartworms in the United States is so high that it is very important to pre-treat a pet before they are exposed to areas where they may get bitten by mosquitoes. These treatments will insure that the pet does not become ill and require more expensive treatment.
Mosquitoes exist and multiply in any area that has standing water or new construction. There are many cases where mosquitoes will inhabit an area near a pool in a home’s yard. It is very hard to protect a pet from playing in a field or yard where there may be standing water and this water can be a breeding ground for infected mosquitoes.
An infestation is fully manifested by the type heartworm symptoms in dogs become visible. Heartworms can live in the bloodstream of a dog, attacking organs throughout the body, for several years with no visible symptoms. By the time the symptoms do begin to appear the dog is ill and needs to see a vet immediately.
When heartworms infect the heart and lungs of the dogs many of the symptoms in dogs of heartworms will become visible. Heartworms clog the vessels in the heart and the blood supply to the brain is significantly reduced. They will often develop a cough that include gasping. In some cases dogs will also cough up blood in their attempts to breathe while coughing.
Another symptom is shortness of breath. While the heartworms invade the heart, they also invade the other organs of the body. By the time symptoms occur the heartworms are usually lodged in the lungs as well as this makes it difficult for the dog to breathe normally. When they breathe it will sound very thready and uneven.
As the organs and brain are deprived of necessary blood and oxygen a pet will begin to lose consciousness often. They will often seem very tired and will be unable to do many of the activities that they once enjoyed. In most cases they will need the assistance of their owner to make a jump or climb stairs.
Heartworm symptoms in dogs that has become visible and noticeable to the owner is an indication that they have a severe infestation. Along with the heartworm infestation most pets also have other infections that result from the inability of their bodies to fight off infection. The treatment for these symptoms involves several trips to the vet for medication and treatment. Following treatment a dog must be kept quiet for several months and checked regularly until the infestation has been destroyed and they can return to health.

When a dog is termed as bad by the owner, usually it is they who are the cause. It’s irritating when walking down the sidewalk in your own neighborhood only to have a dog jump up on your clean clothes. The dog next door might also prefer to leave his calling cards on your front yard.
Would you like to call them bad dogs? They are as bad as the children next door who are out of control. There should be limits set for dogs to follow when inside, outside or in public places. It is wise decision to take the help of a dog trainer to learn the tricks of handling this pet without spoiling its personality. To get to know a good trainer approach your vet or pet store; these trainers often hold private lessons with the pet and the owner but it is just as easy to solve your pet behavior problem by attending any online course on pet management.
This training could teach owners how to be in command of their pets. Trainers have been heard to comment that dogs are easier to train to be obedient than their handlers. When you want the dog to be leash trained, make them practice in a small area away from other distractions. Barking is a behavior which is extremely annoying to both owners and neighbors. Remember when they bark, they is trying to communicate, so if shout or punish them for this, it will only result in puzzling the poor creature.
It is usually lack of food, attention or the need for water that makes a dog bark. The noise of a dog barking can alarm the owners of a burglar intrusion so attempting to stop him from doing this may work against you. It is wrong to encourage a puppy to bark and then punish him for barking when he attains adulthood.
You can bring about a change in behavior in your favor by providing the occasional bit of praise and a special treat; which is something the trainer will show you how to achieve. How do you make your puppy stop the undesired behavior? Well, simply learn to reward him when he does something which is ‘desired’ behavior.
You can not teach a pet some behavioral pattern which contradicts his natural breed. To make your pet follow specific behavioral training, you ought to choose one from a breed with can give you what you need. When does a pet become good? Well, when you train them with patience, resolve and of course, a great deal of affection.

You should find that owning a small dog, similar to owning a larger breed. The owner of a small dog must however make some adaptations to suit the animal’s specific needs.
Consider the following daily dog care routines, and how they’re adapted to meet the needs of your pint-sized pup.
Food considerations: Some of the standard size food you may provide a larger dog ma not be suitable to a smaller breed. You may need to go along to a larger pet food store if you want to find a kibble that will not be to big for his (or her) tiny jaw. You ought to give the miniature canines some canned soft foods.
Where they will stay – safely: Every dog needs the following: regular exercise, an outdoor place for his potty needs, and an enclosed area which provides the animal with security. Smaller dogs are much more nimble that larger dogs and what might be a secure environment for one is not necessarily for the other. It may seem bizarre but it has been know for very large birds to actually take tiny dogs from their gardens. Hence, get your pet a kennel which is covered on the top for the right protection.
Dog training: While the training methodologies may be the same for large as well as tiny and are not any harder, but canine experts confirm that more often than not, the smaller counterparts are usually over-mothered. Although your pet might indeed fit into your pocket (and some breeds can), they still see the world in relation to pack mentality and someone has to be the leader so if you are weak, they will govern you. One of the most important aspects of training is that the dog must imperatively be house trained even if the mess seems insignificant. Dogs are naturally working creatures with many types bred purely for this function so this should also refer to your pet too. for a small reward or treat.
Grooming: Keep in mind that grooming a small dog is slightly different to larger ones and cater for this. These diminutive pets usually require more frequent nail trimming than larger dogs, because they typically spend less time on rough surfaces wearing them down. If you want to ensure they have healthy teeth and gums you will have to brush them at least a couple of times each week as their main diet will consist of soft food from a can. The above makes it clear that it does not matter whether you are taking care of a small dog or a large dog the methods are pretty much the same. The differences between each dog, may look minor and insignificant, but when you pay extra attention to each one aspect, it can provide the correct answer to a dog’s specific requirements.
